The Toa Payoh dragon playground was the first of its kind in Singapore. It was constructed in 1979 and is one of only two dragon playgrounds still in existence in the city-state. Before the redevelopment of the neighborhood, the local community had lost its way to the play structure, which features a mosaic-clad dragon. The only remaining ‘Adventureland in the Straits times area is a man-made slope and a metal cage, but the current design has safety features that prevent sliding down the back.
The dragon playground was originally built in the late 1980s by renowned designer Khor Ean Ghee, who was then working for the Housing Board. The design featured a round blue mosaic, and the structure is reminiscent of a dragon in Chinese mythology. It features a slide and rainbow-colored metal hoops. The iconic playground was a favorite of children in the neighborhood and continues to be so to this day.
While the dragon-shaped sand playground was phased-out because of safety concerns, the other two have been reconstructed with rubber mats. While the Toa Payoh playground has retained its original sand surface, it is believed to be the only dragon playground in Singapore. The other two dragon playgrounds are smaller and feature a traditional Singaporean theme, including the multiracial history of the area.
There are currently four vintage dragon playgrounds in Singapore. The first one, Toa Payoh Dragon Playground, opened in 1975, was the first. The second one is in the Toa Payoh Town Park. The design is very similar to the original, but there are more modern ones too. The T-Rex is guarding an egg with a baby dinosaur in it. The last of the three is the T-Rex in Toa Paioh.
